Winegrowing has been of great importance to the Franconian metropolis of Würzburg since the early Middle Ages. Today, the vineyards at Würzburger Stein are among the largest and most famous single vineyard sites in Europe. Reason enough to take a closer look at VDP viticulture in Würzburg.
Awarded the VDP seal "große Lagen", the wine region "Am Stein" stands for wines with a unique and unmistakable taste. No wonder, because this award is linked to these 4 very strict rules, among others.
1. the yield
The harvest is limited to a maximum yield of 50 hectolitres per hectare, which is well below the yield of large-scale industrial production.
2. the harvest
Only fully ripened grapes may be selectively harvested by hand. The use of mechanical aids, such as a full harvester, is prohibited.
3. vinification
The wines may only be produced using traditional production methods.
4. controls
During regular controls throughout the year, the quality-oriented work in the vineyard, the yield level, as well as the wines before and after bottling, among other things, are checked by an inspection commission.
But these rules are not the only key to the uniqueness of the taste of German Prädikat wines. It is the soils, the wind, the rainfall, the sun, the shade, hot days, cool nights and, of course, the self-sacrificing dedication of the winemakers.
Experience VDP wines
As mentioned at the beginning, Würzburg can also count itself the lucky home of a Prädikatlage. For your search for a unique taste experience, we have two tips for you:
VINERY Bürgerspital
The 700-year-old winery with a vineyard area of 120 hectares mainly offers wines from the Riesling, Silvaner and Burgundy grape varieties. As part of the Bürgerspital zum heiligen Geist foundation, with the original purpose of caring for the needy, the Bürgerspital winery continues to support social welfare to this day. Thus, parts of every bottle sold are used to support social commitments. This makes the wine taste especially good.
VINERY juliusspital
The VDP Weingut Juliusspital awaits you directly in Würzburg's old town. In addition to first-class wines, a monthly changing menu with seasonal and regional specialities awaits you. Even fresh game and fish from local hunts find their place on the plates.
Special tip: Enjoy a wine tasting with a cellar tour and delve deeper into the refinements of the VDP wineries. Early booking is recommended here. Our team will be happy to assist you.
